There's discussion about updating the Fundamental Law to explicitly state: "In Hungary, drug use, distribution, and promotion are strictly prohibited."

The Hungarian government is now cracking down hard on drug users and dealers. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has made it clear that he is ready to invest serious time and energy to put an end to the trade. 

"The only correct and sensible approach to drug trafficking is zero tolerance," Horváth László said.

According to Index, Horváth isn't ruling out taking everything drug dealers own. Instead of authorities proving their money came from dealing, the dealers would have to prove it didn't. Another idea being considered is kicking repeat offenders out of a town or city if they keep selling in their area, all to keep communities safe.

Deputy Chief Péter Bátyi from the Pest County Police said that last week, the police hit another group of drug dealers. On March 25, 2025, officers raided 13 locations across Pest County and ended up arresting eight drug dealers. They also uncovered a drug source in Szigetszentmiklós and took down the connected criminal group.

Bátyi shared that since March 1, the police have carried out 79 operations targeting both drug dealers and users. In total, they have detained 124 people. Out of these, 37 were arrested for dealing drugs, while 87 were caught using them. The crackdown shows the authorities' ongoing efforts to tackle the drug problem in the region.
