Argentina qualifies for the 2026th World cup

Europe has just started the qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup – Hungary will kick off in Dublin this September – but in other parts of the world, some countries have already secured their spot. The three host nations – the United States, Canada, and Mexico – are of course already in the 48-team field.

The defending champion Argentina beat Brazil 4-1 in the early hours of Wednesday (Hungarian time), securing their qualification. Julian Alvarez and Enzo Fernandez gave Argentina a two-goal lead within the first 15 minutes. Cunha pulled one back for Brazil, but two more goals from Argentina (Mac Allister and Simeone) sealed the win, ensuring a comfortable victory even without Lionel Messi. 

No matter the results of the remaining four rounds, Argentina can no longer fall into a position where they wouldn't qualify. After 14 rounds, they're leading ahead of Ecuador, with Uruguay and Brazil in third and fourth. They'll still need a few more wins to secure their spots.

From the Oceania region, New Zealand has already booked their place. Australia will compete in the Asian confederation, where there are still some matches to play, but Japan and Iran are already preparing for the World Cup.
